DR. STOTLAND VISITS ILLINOIS CHAPTER OF IAPA

Dr. Nada Stotland, President of the American Psychiatric Association, attended the Summer 2007 Meeting of the IAPA's Illinois Chapter. She was warmly welcomed to the event by co-hosts Dr. Surinder Nand and Dr. Deepak Kapoor.

Dr. Stotland presented a lecture entitled, "The APA: Whither, Why and How?" She summarized the mission of the APA, and highlighted contributions of first and second generation Indo-American psychiatrists to mainstream American psychiatry, noting their presence in academia, research, clinical practice, and public service. Dr. Stotland believes that the APA and IAPA are strong partners in advocating for the mentally ill, promoting sensitivity to cultural issues and dispeling stigma regarding mental illness.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,
Greetings! On a cold snowy morning in February, my computer screen started flashing--Dr.Dilip Jeste had won the election for APA Trustee at Large, garnering 51.5% of the vote! This was no small news. Dr. Jeste fought a three-way race against two well-known names in American psychiatry: Drs. Francis Lu and Anne Marie Sullivan.

Dr. Jeste became the first Indo-American psychiatrist to be elected in a nationwide contest. His election to this office once again brings home the fact that Indo-American psychiatrists, because of their scholarship, excellent clinical skills and strong advocacy base, are making their mark in mainstream psychiatry. His victory is a testament to the fact that our vote counts. It adds strength to our organization. Our growing numbers should increase our representation and make certain that our collective voice is heard clearly.

Surinder Nand, MD
IAPA President, 2007-09
