New York Chapter
President: Dr. Devendra Amin, MD
Over the last 34 years we have been gathering on a regular basis every year to celebrate the glory of our organization and congratulate IAPA members who have made significant contributions.
This is a landmark year as we are celebrating in New York, the birth place of IAPA. I sincerely hope many of you will be able to join us in this celebration. Dr. Manoj Shah, former president of IAPA, and his team including Drs. Meena Ramani, Vis Ramaswamy, Devendra Amin, and Nalini Juthani have done a fantastic job organizing this event. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to him and his team.
Drs. Ashwin Patkar and Dilipkumar Patel have also done a great job by bringing together a panel of experts to give a presentation on violence and the role of psychiatry at the scientific symposium. Given the assaults and killings that are happening on an everyday basis around the world, this symposium is timely and much needed.
Each year our organization recognizes outstanding IAPA members for their contribution in various fields of psychiatry. The 2014 awards include outstanding academician award (winner Dr. Uma Rao), outstanding public sector award (winner Dr. Mahendra Shah), outstanding service award (winner Dr. Jothika Mannepalli) outstanding resident award (Dr. Nina Vasan), and board of trustees clinic/research award (winner Dr. Anup Sharma). Two other IAPA members have received National recognition: Dr. Sudhakar Madakasira, winner of APA's 2013 Profile of Courage Award, and Dr. Ravi N Shah who was recently elected as the APA Resident-Fellow Member Trustee.
IAPA members have also been busy with international events. Dr. Rajiv Tandon conducted a stimulating workshop on DSM 5 at the 2014 Global Healthcare Summit in Gujarat, India and Dr. Ranga Ram coordinated and organized several presentations by IAPA members for ANCIPS at Pune, India, all of which were well received. We continue to have a strong links with our sister organization AAPI and over the last year have held joined meetings in many cities in the US. Our chapters, the building blocks of our organization are continuing to do well; our councilors Drs. Bhagi Sahasranamam and Bhargavi Devineni have been interacting with our chapter presidents on a regular basis with the goal of strengthening the ties between the chapters.
There are 3 firsts that have happened this year:
1. Facebook creation – thanks to the efforts of our young IAPA reps Drs. Manan Shah, Raman Baweja, and Durga Roy.
2. Sponsorship of mentee mentor award by an IAPA chapter, namely MD. We have 3 winners in the fields of education (Dr,Manan Shah), clinical service ( Dr. Padmapriya Masnuri) and research (Dr. Jaya Padmanabhan).
3. IAPA participation in OMNA. With the support & encouragement of APA OMNA leaders, Dr. Vis Ramaswamy organized a fabulous program on Mental Health of Asian Indian Americans on Sunday, April 13, 2013. IAPA looks forward to more OMNA activities in other states.
As always, I am humbled and honored to serve as the President of this esteemed organization and look forward to my next year of presidency.
Vani Rao, MD
