IAPA HONORS DR. ROBINOWITZ

FILMS MADE BY INDO-AMERICAN PSYCHIATRISTS

Recently, two films produced and directed by second-generation Indo-American psychiatrists have been in the spotlight.

Dr. Arshdeep Jawandha's film "Skylab is Falling!" is based on a true event: in July 1979, the U.S. space station Skylab began its fall from space. While scientists attempted to guide its descent into the Indian Ocean, the possibility remained that it might crash onto the Indian subcontinent. The film tells the story of an innocent Punjabi boy who becomes worried that Skylab will fall on his house as punishment for accidentally killing a frog.

Dr. Vatsal Thakkar's film "Ravaged." is a one-hour drama about a man's struggle with depression and post traumatic stress disorder after his girlfriend has been killed and he has been shot. Click here to watch an interview with Dr. Thakkar about his film.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,
Greetings! On a cold snowy morning in February, my computer screen started flashing--Dr.Dilip Jeste had won the election for APA Trustee at Large, garnering 51.5% of the vote! This was no small news. Dr. Jeste fought a three-way race against two well-known names in American psychiatry: Drs. Francis Lu and Anne Marie Sullivan.

Dr. Jeste became the first Indo-American psychiatrist to be elected in a nationwide contest. His election to this office once again brings home the fact that Indo-American psychiatrists, because of their scholarship, excellent clinical skills and strong advocacy base, are making their mark in mainstream psychiatry. His victory is a testament to the fact that our vote counts. It adds strength to our organization. Our growing numbers should increase our representation and make certain that our collective voice is heard clearly.

Surinder Nand, MD
IAPA President, 2007-09
